Day 1 Weekly Activity-Holiday Blogging

Activity 1:  Let’s imagine that you were alive 2792 years ago and invited to compete in the first ever ancient Olympic Games. Which of these events: running, wrestling, boxing, pankration, horse racing and pentathlon would you compete in? Click on the name of the sport and it will take you to a site that tells you about the sport. On your blog tell us which sport you would choose and why you chose it.

Answer: I'm imagining as if I was around at this century, I would have selected Equestrain race because Equestrain race is an event that involves horse racing around the track which is something that I'm interested in as well as watching it on TV.  The person who is in the chariot gets pulled by 2 - 4 horses. The  reason why I picked this because I could have been the jockey and it sounds fun and wish they could still be in the Olympics.

  1. Hi Anthony!

Welcome to the Winter Learning Journey. I am so happy that you have joined us this holiday!

I am also really interested to read that you have selected equestrian racing as your sport of choice. It is definitely a fascinating event and I also wish that it was still part of the Olympics. I did read, however, that is was quite dangerous and that the chariot racers ('charioteers') often got quite hurt during competition. I suppose that that is why they no longer have chariot racing included in the games. They don't want people getting hurt!

To the best of my knowledge, they do still have some equestrian events in the games. In fact, there is are 8 New Zealanders traveling to Rio in August to compete in the Olympics. If you'd like to read more about them you can follow this link: http://www.nzequestrian.org.nz/high-performance/riders/rio-2016-olympic-team/.

    Cheers, Rachel
